NZSO-SOUNZ Readings

The NZSO-SOUNZ Readings is a collaborative project of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and SOUNZ which aims to increase the performance of orchestral music by New Zealand composers. In general the Readings are held twice a year.

The usual procedure is as follows:
SOUNZ publicises a Call for Submissions and convenes a selection panel. From the submitted scores, the panel selects four-six works that will be given a Reading.
Over two days, the NZSO rehearse the selected works. Each day finishes with a complete play-through of that day's selection. SOUNZ acknowledges the generous support of Radio NZ Concert who record the works for the increased benefit of the event for composers.

The Readings are open for the public to observe and often other orchestral managers and programmers are able to hear the Readings.
Since 1998, 66 works by 45 New Zealand composers have been included in the NZSO-SOUNZ Readings project, of which 23 have now received further performances and four have been released on CD.
