Claire Cowan

I like to collaborate with other artists so that I may be musically inspired by their creative vision, and in turn they may become inspired by mine. In music and art I admire simplicity, emotion and originality.

Biography

Claire received her Bachelor of Music degree from Auckland University in 2005. Her tutors included John Elmsly, Eve de Castro-Robinson, and Peter Scholes, and Victoria Kelly. While at Auckland she was the recipient of both Junior and Senior Bishop music Scholarships, three Douglas Lilburn prizes, and her works received performances from orchestras such as the Auckland Philharmonia, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Wellington and Auckland Youth Orchestras, and Manukau Symphony; as well as the Netherlands Blazer Ensemble on their tour to New Zealand in 2001.

In 2005, virtuoso pianist John Chen commissioned Shadow Hands which has subsequently received performances throughout Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

In 2006 Claire was the youngest Composer featured in the NZSO’s Made in NZ concert. She was also awarded the NZSO NYO composer in residence position with her minimalist work Trains of thinking.

Most recently in 2008 Claire has completed three concert commissions including Recipe for Disaster – the recipient of the SOUNZ Community commission for two conductors and split orchestra, Wood:Strings:Hammers:Flesh – for the young piano trio Scintillatum on their UK tour, and Legend of the Trojan bird – for the Auckland Youth Orchestra’s 60th jubilee USA tour. She has also scored numerous documentaries, short films, and commercial soundtracks.

In 2008 has been involved in a year long association with the Arts Regional Trust in Auckland, supporting the development of her career as as composer.

In September 2008 Claire relocated to Brooklyn, New York to pursue musical collaborations.

“When I heard her music, my already high expectations were exceeded: she had created a beautiful and moving experience. I was excited and flattered that she had produced such a gem for our concert. Her works are always beautifully crafted, with emotional depth, integrity, and reflecting her unique personality.” – Peter Willis, The Committee, Auckland
