2007 SOUNZ Community Commission

19 April 2008 7:30 PM

Conductor Brent Stewart and composer Claire Cowan

The 2007 SOUNZ Community Commission was awarded to the Hutt Valley Concert Orchestra and Auckland-based composer Claire Cowan. The result of their collaboration is Recipe for Diasaster, a work for divided orchestra and two conductors: Stuart Douglas and Brent Stewart. More information about the collaboration can be found on the news pages.

The orchestra celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year and the SOUNZ Community Commission was a means to celebrate both the past achievements and future prospects of the group. Orchestra convenor Lynne Scott describes Recipe for Disaster as “a highly entertaining contest of dominance full of rhythmic drive.”

Also on the programme are well-known favourites Karelia Suite by Sibelius and Grieg’s Wedding day at Troldhaugen along with the dazzling marimba concerto by Brazilian composer Ney Rosauro with the brilliant marimba player Yoshiko Tsuruta.
