The SOUNZ Community Commission is made available through the generosity of an anonymous donor and is administered by SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music.
The SOUNZ Community Commission aims to bring together New Zealand professional composers and community groups to create and perform a new work. It was established in 1999 and has resulted in works for diverse groups such as recorder choir, experimental sound artists and children’s theatre.
Each year proposals are submitted by community groups and/or composers for musical projects that will see them working in a creative partnership. The successful proposal, which is selected by the donor of the commission, results in a grant (currently $1,800) being given to the composer involved in the project. The project is usually completed by the following May with a performance either having taken place or planned.
A score and/or recording of the work is lodged with SOUNZ and SOUNZ Licence or publishing arranged so that it can be performed by other similar groups.
