For decades traditional maori instruments, or taonga puero, were little more than relics which sat silently in muesum displays, and much of their traditional usage has now been forgotten forever. However, due to research carried out by people like Richard Nunns it is now possible to hear these instruments played once again. Gillian Whitehead explores the sound world of taonga puero, combined with cello and piano to create a rich musical hybrid that unifies Maori and European cultures.
