Murray Biggs

Biography

Murray Biggs was born in Timaru in 1954 and educated at Tawa College, Victoria University of Wellington (BMus, 1976), Auckland Secondary Teachers College, Berklee College of Music (Boston, USA) and at the University of London's Goldsmiths College. He taught at Waihi College from 1977-1978 and served as Music Librarian at Westminster City Libraries (London) from 1980-1983. Biggs also taught at Alperton High School (London) in 1984 and Parliament Hill Girls School (London) in 1985. He was HOD Music at Heretaunga College, Wellington, and Musical Director for the Wellington Australasian and International Jazz Festivals in 1988, 1989 and 1990.

Biggs has contributed to the periodicals Canzona, Agenda and Music in NZ and has performed with the jazz quartet "Blue Bossa" playing flute, soprano and alto saxophones. He was a member of the CANZ Committee in 1986, where he also served as Secretary/Treasurer from 1987-1979. From 1988-1989 he was Secretary of the NZ Jazz Foundation.
