Biography

Joanna Drimatis holds degrees in Music Education and Violin Performance from the University of Western Australia and the Canberra School of Music. In 1996, she completed a Masters in Music at the University of Texas at Austin where she studied violin with Eugene Gratovich and conducting with Timothy Muffitt.

Joanna has performed at the Strawberry Creek Chamber Music Festival (USA), the Aspen Music Festival (USA), the International Institute of Music(Germany) and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, the International Viola Congress(NZ) as well as other festivals in NZ. In addition she has performed in masterclasses given by Dorothy Delay, Charles Castleman and Oleh Krysa. Joanna has been concertmaster of the University of Texas at Austin Symphony Orchestra and the WA Youth Orchestra and is a former member of AYO and the Canberra Symphony.

While at the University of Texas, Joanna conducted the University Orchestra (the second symphony orchestra at the University) as well as orchestras for the University of Texas String Project. Joanna has also conducted for the Canberra and Western Australian Youth Orchestra Societies. In 1995, Joanna was awarded the Texas Bass Scholarship that enabled her to participate in the Conducting Seminar Programme at the Aspen Music Festival studying with Murry Sidlin. In March-April 2000, she undertook private conducting studies with David Effron at Indiana University, Bloomington. Joanna has been a masterclass participant in conducting workshops given by the Auckland Philharmonia and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra with Miguel Harth-Bedoya and Matthias Bamert. In February 2004, she was selected to participate in the American Symphony Leagues’s Donald Thulean Conducting Workshop where Joanna conducted the Atlanta Symphony Chorus and Atlanta Youth Orchestra. From July 2003-March 2004 Joanna was granted permission to observe Music Director Laureate, Marin Alsop work with the Colorado Symphony.

In 1997 Joanna moved to Christchurch, NZ where she was a member of the Christchurch Symphony, freelanced as a chamber and orchestral musician on violin and viola and was Music Director of the Christchurch Youth Orchestra. During her tenure as Music Director, the CYO collaborated with Canterbury Opera Youth, the International Ballet Academy of Christchurch and was included in the outreach programmes of the Christchurch Symphony and the NZSO. Several CYO performances were also broadcast on Concert FM NZ.

In addition to her work with the CYO, Joanna has conducted the Christchurch Symphony, the Nelson Symphony, the University of Canterbury Chamber Orchestra and orchestras for the Christchurch School of Music.

Joanna moved to Adelaide in June 2004. She is a PhD candidate and part-time lecturer in Aural at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, conductor for the Adelaide Youth Orchestra, guest conductor of the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra and is a casual member of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
