James Roberson is a Graduate of the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Arts Conjoint Degree, majoring in Classical Performance Voice, Drama and English. James attained a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary) in 2015 and has since been working as a classroom teacher, studio vocal teacher, performer, and choir director. James has always had a passion for new works and his compositions aim to reflect the needs of the performers with whom he comes into contact. He composed Southern North, an art song cycle about three iconic Wellington locations in 2015 for solo voice and piano, which he re-visited in 2018. In 2017 he composed a brand new work for his choir Sanctus at Sancta Maria College. This work celebrates Mother Mary and is an original concept for an Ave Maria. Hail Mary, Ave Maria! Is written for SAB and contrasts the desperation of voices calling out to Mary for help through the English text “Hail Mary”, with the devoted churchly worship of Mary through the traditional Latin ’Ave Maria’. James especially enjoys composing for voice/piano and choirs and is constantly seeking opportunities to write and perform new works.
