Biography

Michael Jamieson is one of New Zealand’s most sought-after saxophonists. He started playing at age 14 and went on to study at Victoria University of Wellington and Massey University. He received a Massey University Cultural Award, a grant from Creative NZ, and the prestigious Patricia Pratt Music Scholarship, enabling him to undertake Masters study at the Messiaen Academie in the Netherlands and the Conservatoire National de Région de Strasbourg in France.

Michael is in demand as an orchestral and chamber musician, and has worked with such groups as the NZSO, Auckland Philharmonia, Dutch Radio Chamber Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Rata Trio, Hanumi Saxophone Quartet and the Royal New Zealand Navy Band, with whom he is the principal saxophonist.

Michael teaches saxophone and woodwinds at the University of Auckland and at schools in Rotorua, Tauranga and Auckland. He is the director of the New Zealand Classical Saxophone Summer School.

He is a D'Addario Woodwinds and Selmer-Paris Saxophones Performing Artist.
