Biography

Born and bred in Christchurch, New Zealand, Marcus completed a Master of Music with Distinction at the Royal Northern College of Music, generously supported by the RNCM Buffet-Crampon and Creative New Zealand NZ/Aotearoa scholarships.

Studying with Nick Cox, John Bradbury and Antonio Salguero at the RNCM, Marcus has played with the Hallé Orchestra and participated in the prestigious orchestral academy with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Europe’s leading chamber orchestra. While at the RNCM Marcus was awarded the Woods/Candlin woodwind performance prize, performed in masterclasses with Andreas Ottensamer (pincipal clarinet, Berlin Philharmonic), Markus Stockhausen and Sir Mark Elder and performed two BBC Radio 3 Live broadcasts as part of their BBC Young Musicians and ‘Hear & Now’ programmes. Competition successes include first prize in the RNCM 2015 Concerto Competition and first prize in the RNCM Cross-School Chamber Music prize for 2015 which resulted in competing as a finalist for the Chris Rowland Ensemble of the Year Prize being awarded the ‘Audience Choice’ prize.

As a recitalist, Marcus presented a lunchtime recital of New Zealand music for solo clarinet at the 2014 Cantiere Internazionale D’Arte di Montepulciano, Italy, performed in London’s Wigmore Hall and St. John’s Smith Square and most recently presented a lunchtime recital as part of the 2015 Australian & New Zealand Literature and Arts Festival at King’s College, London.

Marcus completed his Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours from the University of Canterbury and New Zealand School of Music, while holding the bass clarinet position with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

Marcus is generously support by the Royal Northern College of Music Buffet-Crampon Scholarship for 2014/15, NZ/Aotearoa Scholarship Trust, Dame Malvina Major Foundation and the Winifred Bessie Louisa Owen Trust.
