Biography

Ngāti Kahungunu, Te Whakatōhea

Makayla Purcell Mainini (Maki) is an up and coming singer-songwriter who started her craft at 12 yrs old.

Her first original song: 'I am myself - Ahau I ahau' - was performed in both English and te reo Māori by Taradale High Choir at the 'Big Sing in 2017' (High school choral completion). The song sought to encourage young wāhine to pursue their personal goals and foster a belief they could achieve anything regardless of obstacles. Makayla's stage presence has been described as spell-binding and heart-felt.

She has performed at Matariki concerts, Zeal concerts, Rock Quest and yearly at the 'Kids Extravaganza Day'. She placed first in the 2019 Zest Quest talent completion with her original 'Good Feelings'. Makayla’s vocal and talent range is impressive and the joy she gives to people with her music is extremely gratifying for her.

Makayla was born in Boston, MA in 2003. Her parents brought her home to New Zealand, as an infant. She is descended from Ngāti Kahungunu and Te Whakatōhea iwi. She also has Italian, Samoan, Scottish and English blood.

Makayla has been described by her teachers’, as an exemplary student and is the head girl at Taradale High in her final year of school.

She loves netball, choir, drama, art, kapa haka and te reo Māori. Makayla believes that kapa haka nurtures one’s wairua (spirit). She is also proud of her ‘Celtic and Italian’ heritage.

Her goal in life is to be a singer-songwriter, actor, model and to spread her music everywhere. She believes music can forge bridges between cultures, religions, ethnicities and can make for a better world. It is hoped she will obtain support to achieve her goals.

She is working towards writing 8 to 10 originals of various styles to record her first CD.
