Biography

Tau’ili’ili Alpha Maiava is a Samoan-born NZ music composer, vocalist, and a content creator with the emphasis on Tagata Moana cultural revival and preservation. Tau’ili’ili was part of the Mt. Vaea Band that made history by winning the Best Polynesian Album at the Hawaii Music Awards 2005, including Best Pacific Group, Best Pacific Album & Best Language Album at the Pacific Music Awards in 2006.

A lifetime lover/student/practitioner of reggae/dancehall and Moana Pacific musics, he is widely known as one of the pioneers of Samoan dancehall upon the release of Ti’eti’e Ta’avale, a popular track on Paul Ah Kuoi’s debut album titled Pure Samoan. This unique Samoan dancehall fusion dominated Victor & Fanu’s second studio album with Tau’ili’ili featuring on 8 of the 13 tracks. Samoan dancehall is now a mainstay of the island nations reggae artists.

He also co-produced and hosted the Sounds of the Moana 2-part podcast series that won the music category at the prestigious New York Festival Radio Awards, dubbed the Oscars of podcasting. Tau’ili’ili main works is concentrated around building mechanisms to protect and advocate for Moana Pacific composers through copyrights protection, language empowerment through sounds, for both mainstream and the disability space.
