Field of Remembrance

Ceremony or service

A 20 minute long musical piece entitled Remembrance has been written especially for the RSA's Field of Remembrance ceremony by composer Anthony Young. Remembrance is a result of the SOUNZ Community Commission, which promotes the collaboration of professional kiwi composers with community groups. Whangarei Youth Music (a community music organization that operates from Kamo High music suite on Friday afternoons) applied for the SOUNZ Community Commission last year and won the New Zealand wide grant.

The musical piece Remembrance has an instrumental part played by the Whangarei Youth Music Concert Band being conducted by Shane Burns, and a choral part which is being sung by a collaboration of members from local choirs plus other interested members of the public who have been practicing hard over the last 2 months (the youngest member of the choir is 8 years old and the oldest is over 80), and the choir has been directed by Mary Britton and assisted by members from the Harmony Chorus.

The choir and band has been supported by funding from the Whangarei District Council.

The words of Remembrance are based on the poignant writings of William Malone as he wrote home to his wife from Chanuk Bair in World War 1, where he died in action, and, on the book of Jeremiah from the Maori Bible.

The piece will be sung while crosses to acknowledge those who have fallen in service of the country, are placed in the park.
