Toru is a new trio consisting of three principal players from Orchestra Wellington. Debussy popularised this combination of flute, viola, and harp with his Sonate en trio; its magnificently varied timbral palette has since captured the imaginations of composers, performers, and audiences alike. Undoubtedly drawing on the evocative fantasy of Debussy's writing, the Bax sonata moves from impressionism to melodies and dance rhythms that give the music a distinctly Irish character. The trio are also including in their mix of romantic and contemporary repertoire the quirky and entertaining 'Zoological' character pieces of Wendelin Bitzen and a clever arrangement of a Beethoven serenade in programmes that are sure to delight audiences.
