As a cornet/trumpet player Ken Smith (1930–2018) was without peer in New Zealand history, and his arrangements for brass band show an intimate knowledge of brass instruments and of combinations and colours within the ensemble. Nearly all of his arrangements are transcriptions of orchestral pieces, and he was fastidious in maintaining the contrasts of different orchestral colours and groupings in his brass band versions. The arrangements show a thoughtful and sensitive approach in which the arranging challenges of each orchestral work are given a unique solution.
This tribute album features sixteen of Ken Smith's arrangements for brass band, performed by The Ken Smith Players.
