Jann Rutherford - The Scented Garden

This CD contains a significant part of the output of pianist/composer Jann Rutherford, from the mid 1990s to 2003, and serves as a companion to her first solo piano album Discovery. On the present album, Jann presents these songs with her quartet of the past three years with special guest Roger Manins on tenor sax. She recorded this material with enormous courage and determination just two months before her untimely death from cancer on 9th March 2003 at age 38. It is very fortunate that Jann could summon the strength and love necessary to make this album: her concise compositional style, impressionistic harmonies and clear, heart-felt melodies are now beautifully recorded for all to experience. - Paul Cutlan
