About

This fanfare for orchestra was written in November 1998 in preparation for the millennial celebrations. It is based on a song I wrote in 1979, setting the 14th sonnet from John Donne's Divine Meditations (Bater my heart, three-personed God) and taking the lines, "That I rise, and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend Your force, to break, to blow burn, and make me new" as inspiration. Perhaps we can hope that the new millennium will produce a new understanding, love, tolerance and love from the ashes of the violence, hatred, intolerance and scepticism of the 20th century.
