About

This piece is dedicated to my friends, Jim and Jeanette McQuillan.

The work was written at the request of Professor Jack Speirs for the Southern Consort of Voices, Dunedin, with the support of the Mozart Fellowship (1992) at Otago University.

I've tried to capture the rich colour palette of the poem with chorale writing; this is intercut to jazz inflected 'horse' race rhythms and age old fugato as means of variety, all within an accelerating tempi pattern.

The poem Humming is by Hone Tuwhare, published in Short Back and Sideways (1992, Godwit Press, Auckland)

– Bruce Crossman
