The second of the Musica Sacra Canticles serves as a foil to the dramatic, serious nature of the first set. The substantial organ accompaniment has gone: this set is for unaccompanied double choir. Exploiting the lush sonorities that the choir is renowned for, Set 2 uses a full range of dynamics and textures, from unison singing to the richness of eight independent parts. The driving beat of the first set is replaced by a broader and sometimes elliptical quintuple rhythm, which produces softer contours. The key is D major, with complex harmonies reminiscent of those of Herbert Howells. (Musica Sacra)
