About

'surge' is a fanfare for orchestra in three sections, in which repetitive rhythms and ostinati pulsate throughout the piece, as forces within the orchestra push and pull against each other musically, and figures move around the orchestra spatially. In this piece, the orchestra could be compared to a noun of some sort - a beast, a wave or something which rises, and is tossed and turned amongst the orchestra, transformed into several different forms before rising and surging towards the final bar.
