About

As the title of Progress suggests, the piece incorporates a triumphant feeling of forward momentum, provided by almost constant quaver movement throughout. However, this is offset by the use of frequently changing time signatures and some bitonality, which provide a sense of instability and unease. The opening theme, played by pizzicato strings, always returns in its original key of G (though with different harmonisations) until the final section, giving an overall feeling of stasis that is also at odds with the title. Musically the piece draws inspiration from Stravinsky and Bartok, as well as Minimalism.
