About

This piece harks back to William Dart's fleet-footed finesse and flourish as a young roller skater. William's mother managed the roller skating club at Whakatane and William became a national champion for his age group.

The axel jump is considered one of the most technically challenging jumps in single figure skating, the triple axel involving three and a half rotations. This requires a supreme sense of focus, grace and virtuosity. Triple Axel was written for Stephen de Pledge to perform at William's 70th birthday party, 24 June, 2017, Rannoch House, Auckland.

Commissioned note

Triple Axel is a response to an invitation to write a short piece for William Dart's 70th birthday to be performed by Stephen de Pledge.
