About

narcissus, for two clarinets, is a study of the relation between object and image. It is based on the Ancient Greek myth of Narcissus, a beautiful youth who fell in love with his own reflection. He becomes increasingly infatuated and in some versions of the myth he commits suicide, unable to bear the separation between himself and his image. To some extent this is an exploration of the distorting effect of closeness and intimacy upon perception: we get lost in the extreme close up. As the image becomes saturated with the details and flaws of its originating object, it gains its own independence, fragility and violence.
