This song pays homage to the awe-inspiring power of a rainbow. Kahukura, the god of the rainbow, was one of the most revered gods of the southern tribe of Kai Tahu. Our ancestors looked to the appearance of the rainbow for guidance as to the likely outcome of important events such as battles. The Māori lyrics are asking for signs that will lead to good fortune.
