About

This piece was written between April and June 2019 in honour of the victims of the Christchurch Massacre, when I was in the middle of my opera The Bacchae. I initially sat down to write a poem but what came out first was this piece. The initial unity of the strings at prayer is shattered by the shooting and there is chaos as people flee and fall. Once the trumpets stop, individual instruments call out trying to grasp normality again. Other people come to help. The rest of the piece represents an attempt to come to grips with what has happened and try to re-establish the initial unity.
