The Maori word "wairere' means waterfall (amongst several meanings) although the title came about during the composition process. After working on the piece for a while the idea occurred that the busy accompaniment figure n the piano was somewhat suggestive of the movement of water and perhaps a waterfall cascading down a hill-side. The music has a forward momentum that seldom falters, although a brief cadenza-like section for the viola provides a short respite.
