About

Early in my time at university John Rimmer played us a recording of Vox Balaenae by George Crumb. It awakened an enduring interest in the music of that composer, but also lead me to the poetry of Federico García Lorca, and the Spanish language.

Although my own musical style diverged from Crumb’s path, elements of his influence remain in my chamber music, especially the smaller-scale works involving voice. This piece sets a small fragment from Lorca’s poetry – the translation is: ‘When the moon rises sea covers land and the heart feels like an island in infinity’.
