About

Petite Suite for double reed trio (2 oboes and bassoon) consists of four short movements – Marche, Cavatina, Scherzino and Danse. The musical language is modal, often relying on simple melody and ostinati creating a clear and harmonious effect. The piece is suitable for student performance.

Petite Suite was arranged for double reed trio in 2018 in Xinzheng, Henan, and is based on a piece of the same name for clarinet trio (2 clarinets in B flat and bass clarinet in B flat) composed in Shah Alam, Malaysia in 2015, and published by Alea Publications. This in turn is an arrangement of Melodies for 3 cellos composed in Melbourne in 2008, a commission from Jillian Carey for her cello students in Nelson, New Zealand composed with the assistance of a grant from Creative New Zealand/Toi Aotearoa Creative Communities, Nelson.

Petite Suite was awarded second prize in the New Zealand Double Reed Society Composition Competition and was received its first performance along with other finalists at the Mount Eden Village Centre, Auckland on 21 July 2018.
