About
Longing is a lied for soprano and divisi string orchestra including a solo string quartet. The text was drawn from one of the Chinese poets who provided the words for Mahler's das Lied von der Erde, Li Tai Po, but translated into English rather than the German of Hans Bethge's 'die chinesische Flöte'. Musical influences include early Schoenberg (particularly Tranfigured Night), Mahler and Britten.
