About
Home for the Winter is a short duo for flute and piano, and was commissioned by Hannah Darroch and Andrew Crooks with support from Creative New Zealand. The title of the piece refers to the many kiwis that returned to New Zealand during the Covid-19 pandemic, including Hannah and Andrew, as well as my own experience of spending more time at home than usual during pandemic times. Musically the piece is based around intertwining melodies, and intuitively combines elements of jazz and modal harmony, conveying a sense of uncertainty and suspended animation.
