About

I composed I Heard Nothing But The Roaring Sea at the end of April 2021. The song juxtaposes fragments of text from The Seafarer and The Epic of Gilgamesh. Both texts concern solitary figures alone in a vast sea, and I shift between these two narratives fluidly and frequently throughout the piece. The vocal style is ornate, with widespread use of melismas (a group of notes sung to only one syllable) and trillo (commonly known as a ‘Monteverdi trill’, a kind of rapid repetition of a note within the throat, and rich in Venetian allusion).
