How to write a piece to commemorate the life of such an extraordinary person? Although I have no recollection of his [Neil Ashcroft's] thoughts on 12-tone music, I think he would have liked the idea that the 12 letters of his name could generate a tone row. I have marked this row in the score with a Schönbergian symbol, not because it is a "Nebenthema“ (subordinate theme), but rather a "Neilthema“. I have also tried to incorporate some of the musics of our youth in the score and some that will also appear on the program for his farewell concert in Wellington by the NZ String Quartet.
May he live on forever in all our memories.
