IA releases ‘Te Aho Tapu’, the first single from their forthcoming Debut EP. A velvety R&B track with the organic voice of the Ngūru (traditional Māori flute) bringing a grounded sense of mauri and beauty to the waiata. Te Aho Tapu is a love song which takes inspiration from raranga, the art of traditional Māori weaving. It is as much a classical Māori love song as it is a modern R&B track, weaving old and new together both lyrically and musically. The lyrics were seeded by an ancient weaving whakatauki ‘Aitia te wahine i roto i te pā harakeke’ which suggest marrying the women found in the flax plantation. The whakatauki inspired the lyrics which interweave metaphors and acknowledgments from the world of weaving. The name itself, ‘Te Aho Tapu’ means ‘The Sacred Thread’, the thread of life that weaves korowai, whanau, matauranga, love and entire generations together.
From Aotearoa New Zealand, IA create indigenous soul music. Their compositions blend old with new and feature the voices found with traditional Māori instruments/taonga puoro. The puoro voices are blended with modern instruments, ancient poetic writing style and modern soulful melodies. IA has been discovering new frontiers with traditional Maori instruments by using taonga puoro as the driving force in their creative process. Featuring Moetu Smith, Reti Hedley and Turoa Pohatu, the Waikato based band is dedicated to showcasing taonga puoro and Te Reo Maori in their music.
