Band Name: IA Featuring: Pianika Duncan Song Title: Pūmau Release Date: 20 Jan 2022 Composed by: Reti Hedley, Moetu Smith, Turoa Pohatu Produced by: Reti Hedley Country: Aotearoa New Zealand Langauge: Te Reo Māori Director: Moehau Hodges-Tai

IA deliver their first single of 2022 with the love song ‘Pūmau’, featuring the duet vocals of Pianika Duncan & band member Reti Hedley. Composed entirely with taonga puoro/traditional Māori instruments, ‘Pūmau’ draws upon traditional pao rhythms, bringing the sounds of ancient Māori rhythms to the present day. The absence of western instruments creates a resonant soundscape that is stripped back, yet coloured with emotion, soulful vocals and organic grooves. With the aim to bring historical stories from the ancestors into modern day, the lyrics are inspired by a historic mōteatea/chant, He Waiata Aroha Mo Te Manana Kauaterangi, by Turuhira. This particular mōteatea was chosen because of its inspiring love story and whakapapa that links to IA band member, Turoa Pohatu.

From Aotearoa New Zealand, IA create indigenous soul music. Their compositions blend old with new and feature the voices found with traditional Māori instruments/taonga puoro. The puoro voices are blended with modern instruments, ancient poetic writing style and modern soulful melodies. IA has been discovering new frontiers with traditional Maori instruments by using taonga puoro as the driving force in their creative process. Featuring Moetu Smith, Reti Hedley and Turoa Pohatu, the Waikato based band is dedicated to showcasing taonga puoro and Te Reo Maori in their music.
