About

The text of this carol dates back to 1816, although only became popular after 1825 when it was published as the first of "Three New Carols for Christmas Day". Hence the title used here. The setting is tonal and with jazzy syncopations throughout.
The words are from the pen of James Montgomery (1771-1854) who was a Scottish-born hymn writer, poet and editor, who eventually settled in Sheffield. He was raised in the Moravian Church and theologically trained there, so that his writings often reflect concern for humanitarian causes, such as the abolition of slavery and the exploitation of child chimney sweeps.

The score is available from the composer (contact info@sounz.org.nz).

Contents note

This new setting of the well-known "Angels from the Realms of Glory" was written for the end of year staff choir at Westlake Girls High School, at the request of Fiona Wilson, head of the music department.
