for 11-piece mixed ensemble
About
Ngā Tuone sees the composer guide his 11-piece ensemble of improvisers through an hour-long epic via a system of conducting/directing of his devising. This system of gestures or ‘conduction’ provides cues for the type of sound to be produced, with the improvisers given space for interpretation in line with their own musicality and the group dynamic.
The resulting work is both profound and light-hearted and rewards sustained viewing. It unfolds over four movements: ‘Nothingness’, ‘Birth’, ‘Chaos of Life’ and ‘Death and Transcendence’.
