About

In July 2008 I visited the Ngarua dry limestone caves on Takaka Hill for the first time, and saw within these magnificent underground chambers massive tubular columns some of which can be used as marimba-like resonators. Various musical ideas suggested themselves, including a performance of ‘Calls from the Ark’ for two bass clarinets with the addition of resonances from the columns. This provided the musical impetus for Refrains Below which freely re-works and transforms many of the materials of the earlier work for the ensemble of violin and bass clarinet, percussion and piano.
