Counsel in Concert: At the Movies!

Concert

Counsel in Concert has grown out of the Crown Law music group and is based at Crown Law. The choir has been rehearsing weekly for this performance since July and includes around 50 lawyers from throughout the Wellington region as well as law staff from Crown Law. The orchestra includes many talented lawyer-musicians and is augmented by members of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Vector Wellington Orchestra.

The exciting programme consists of music written specifically for movies, combined with favourite classical music featuring in movie sound tracks. The concert will include music from The Mission and Conquest of Paradise as well as music by Beethoven, Verdi, Rossini and Canteloube. The soloists are well-known soprano Deborah Wai Kapohe, baritone Jared Holt and tenor John Beaglehole. The performance will be conducted by Kenneth Young.

The programme also features a new composition for choir and orchestra written specially for the event by lawyer/composer Aaron Lloydd (pictured second from right). Aaron has a masters degree in composition from Victoria University, as well as 20 years experience playing and writing for orchestras, brass bands, and punk bands. Aaron works in the Ministry of Social Development’s Legal Services advising on all aspects of the Ministry’s business, with a personal focus on youth justice issues. The work, titled “The Fundamental Obligations of Lawyers” takes its text directly from section 4 of the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006. Aaron says in composing the work he used simple harmonic and rhythmic figures in a way that matches the structure of the statutory provision.

The organisers of the concert are very grateful to the sponsors: Simpson Grierson, Russell McVeagh, Thomson Reuters, DLA Phillips Fox, John Miller Law, Lambton Chambers Barristers, New Zealand Law Society, Tripe Matthews & Feist, Rachael Dewar Law, WCM Legal and Fyfe & Doherty.
