Mahurangi for solo viola was composed for my long-standing colleague David Nalden and was completed in September, 1992.
During the composition of the work, the influential American composer John Cage died and as a hommage to this great figure of the twentieth century the notes C,A,G,E assume prominence as the work proceeds.
The title refers to an important place for me. A place where my family and I go to 'unwind' from the rigours of city life. Here we commune with nature and delight in the joys of being close to the sea.
